If You Should Go
(for Sandy)
I’m glad that you have come to me;
a father’s love could ask no more.
For you, my heart will always be
an open door.
Your lamp, dear daughter, has a glow.
You’ve kept it trimmed, your oil stored.
You ask me now if you should go
and serve the Lord.
If you should go, you will be tried;
it won’t be easy, but it’s true
that as you serve Him, He will guide
and see you through.
If you should go, you’ll ever live
within the hearts of those you touch,
hearts who will teach you how to give
and love so much.
You’ll learn no joy can be compared
with that when prayers ascend above
from broken hearts with whom you’ve shared
the Savior’s love.
I know you’ve heard this all before;
forgive your papa’s mission zeal.
All I can say is nothing more
than how I feel.
There is but one way to be sure;
He promised He would hear us all.
Another Father’s open door
awaits your call.
Your nature, daughter, is divine,
as is the road He’d have you choose.
Your prayer for guidance—yours and mine—
He’ll not refuse.
Your heart, from God, you cannot hide;
He will answer; you will know.
Receive His answer, then decide
if you should go.

Poet‘s comments about “If You Should Go”
Although the Lord’s voice through His prophets continues to call every worthy and capable young man to serve a full-time mission, it continues to be a matter of individual choice for young women. With five daughters, I felt the need to impress on each of them that the decision whether to serve or not to serve a mission should be made only after sincere personal communion with their Father in Heaven. His promise to all His children is that if we are making every effort to live worthily, we can approach Him expecting either a confirmation or a stupor of thought for every major decision we make in life. I am grateful for that promise. My two daughters who chose to serve missions and my two daughters who chose marriage all made inspired choices. I hope that one other daughter will some day also use the process to decide if she should go.
